Silver Care

Our silver cleaning tips and care advice for your precious Bali jewellery.

Leopard shell            Paua shell                Mother of pearl

We clean our Bali silver jewellery with special anti tarnish buffing cloths. These cloths are impregnated with cleaner and have anti tarnish properties and are excellent for bringing silver to a perfect shine. We do not recommend silver dips or liquid cleaners as our jewellery incorporates natural shells, mother of pearl and ebony wood which can be easily damaged by these harsh chemicals.

A point to remember is that the Indonesian silversmiths decorate the jewellery using tiny sterling silver dots, lines and scrolls. This is called granulation and is often applied over oxidized silver to highlight the design. The brightness of the granulation looks fantastic against the darker oxidization. Just a buff with an impregnated cloth will be enough to preserve these little works of art.

Another tip is to keep your individual pieces in little air tight zip lock bags. Sterling silver reacts naturally to air and moisture and will tarnish over time. Keeping your precious jewellery in air tight bags will greatly reduce the incidence of tarnishing. Your jewellery will also be protected from scratches and scuffing.

925 is the accepted sterling stamp of Bali and Indonesia (and other countries) which indicates the purity of silver in the hand-crafting of the piece. All of our Balinese silver jewellery is to the fineness standard of 925.

The sterling silver standard of 925 indicates that the silver content must be 92.5% pure silver. The remaining 7.5% will be an alloy, usually copper which is added to give the silver strength whilst at the same time maintaining the natural beauty of the precious metal. 99.9% pure silver is generally regarded as too soft to use effectively in jewellery.
